What belongs in a bedtime routine?

NHLBI recommends regular sleep and wake times, quieter time before bed, less bright evening light and a quiet, cool, dark bedroom. It also advises avoiding heavy late meals and alcohol before bed, and considering the effects of caffeine and nicotine. NHLBI: Healthy sleep habits

These are general sleep-habit recommendations. They are not a guarantee of uninterrupted sleep and do not establish whether a supplement will help you. A routine should fit your responsibilities, environment and any advice from your clinician.

Turn the advice into a workable evening

The following planning prompts are an illustrative way to apply those principles. They are not a clinical treatment schedule, and the exact timing can differ between people.

Part of the eveningA planning question
Finishing the dayWhat task can I complete earlier so it does not spill into bedtime?
Winding downWhich quiet activity is practical for me: reading, gentle relaxation or another familiar activity?
Preparing the roomWhat light, sound or comfort issue can I reasonably change?
Next morningWhat wake-up time fits the schedule I can maintain?

Choose a small change you can actually keep. For example, set aside a place for unfinished tasks so the wind-down period does not become another work session. This is a planning suggestion, not a claim that it treats insomnia.

Account for the day as well as the evening

NHLBI notes that caffeine’s effects can last up to eight hours. It also encourages daytime outdoor activity where possible. A bedtime routine therefore cannot be evaluated solely by the last few minutes before sleep. Healthy sleep habits

If shift work, caregiving or another obligation makes a conventional schedule unrealistic, do not interpret that as personal failure. Describe the constraint when asking a clinician for help. Keep a sleep diary if you want a clearer record of how nights vary.

Sleep habits and insomnia treatment are different

For long-term insomnia, NHLBI describes CBT-I as a usual first treatment. It is a structured approach, not simply a list of bedtime tips. NHLBI: Insomnia treatment

If sleep difficulties persist or affect daily life, discuss them with a healthcare professional. Do not use an increasingly elaborate routine, a supplement or a diary as a reason to delay assessment.

Where do supplements fit into the decision?

A routine does not require a purchase. If you are considering a supplement separately, check the label, evidence and medication questions before deciding. Read the Yu Sleep formula assessment and safety guide for the limits of our product review.

Avoid crediting a product for every change if you also changed your schedule or environment. Our research-reading guide explains why personal observations and controlled research answer different questions.
