GUIDES / SLEEP TRACKING

Keep a sleep diary.
Bring a clearer picture.

A small, consistent record can make a conversation about sleep more concrete.

What is a sleep diary for?

A sleep diary records what you notice about nights and days. NHLBI offers a printable version covering sleep quantity and quality, medicines, caffeine, alcohol and daytime sleepiness, for discussion with a doctor. NHLBI: Printable sleep diary

Its value is organization. Instead of trying to remember whether every night was difficult, you have a dated record. It is not a diagnostic test, a wearable-device score or proof that a particular product caused a change.

Choose a format you can keep using

Use the NHLBI diary or a simple notebook. Keep estimates honest: if you do not know exactly when you fell asleep, describe it as an estimate. The following is an example of how to organize your own notes, rather than a validated scoring tool.

Part of the recordExample prompt
NightWhen did you go to bed and get up? What do you remember about waking?
Next dayHow rested or sleepy did you feel? Did this affect ordinary tasks?
ContextWere there changes in your schedule, environment or usual routine?
Products and drinksWhat medicines, supplements, caffeine or alcohol did you use, and when?

Use the same words or a simple consistent scale for your own impressions. There is no need to manufacture minute-by-minute accuracy. If a clinician provides a different format, use their instructions.

Look for questions, not a self-diagnosis

Suppose you note a poor night after both a late shift and a new supplement. The diary records that they happened together; it cannot separate their effects. Similarly, one better night after a change cannot tell you whether the same improvement would have happened anyway.

A useful appointment note might be: “I noticed several difficult nights after my schedule changed. Here are the dates and the products I was taking.” That is more precise than claiming the record has identified the cause.

Keep observation separate from explanation

Write what happened first. Put your interpretation in a separate note so a possible explanation does not become a recorded fact.

Use your notes in the next conversation

Bring the record, your questions and the actual labels of products you use. Let your healthcare professional decide whether any assessment or treatment is appropriate. Do not postpone needed care to finish a diary or change prescribed medicines to create a cleaner experiment.

If you are considering a supplement, our label-reading guide helps organize product information. The Yu Sleep safety page explains the limits of the information available about that blend.

Connect the diary with your routine

A separate bedtime-routine guide covers practical sleep habits. Keep any changes visible in your notes. The aim is to describe your experience clearly, not to meet a perfect-sleep target or establish a supplement’s efficacy.
